Mountain Bulgaria Sightseeing
In Bulgaria you will find an abundance of mountain ranges. Stara Planina stretch hundreds of miles across the country from the capital
Sofia and down towards the coast. The capital itself nests beneath the heights of Mount Vitosha, with the Rila mountains soaring into the sky less than an hours drive from the city, and is home of the highest peak on the Balkans - Musala (an impressive 2925 metres). You can visit one of the most beautiful mountains in Europe - Pirin. The Rhodopes range extends onwards from Rila and down towards the south and south east of the country. Bulgaria offers some of the best ski resorts in Europe, at the traditional ski ones - Bovorets and Pamporovo, as well as the relatively new ski resort of Bansko, and also, there are many other smaller places to ski throughout the country through, with skiing available at Vitosha, less than half an hour from the city centre. You will find the best ski resorts in the Rila and Rhodope ranges but there are other ski runs stretching across the country over the Stara Planina, and also there are many hiking routes too.
Bulgarian Countryside
The countryside in Bulgaria is beautiful - green, lush hill sides, thick with vine yards and cherry and peach blossoms, dot the landscape, backdropped by stunning mountains or sparkling seas. Bulgaria ripples from plains to rolling hills, interlaced by rivers and ridges, and almost a third of Bulgaria is covered by forests (mainly conifers), so the wildlife is in abundance. Littered throughout this wonderful landscape are multitudes of villages, some consisting of just a few houses, others the size of small towns, but many people in Bulgaria have moved out of the villages and into the larger towns in the last decade or so. This is the reason why there is so much property available at such great prices in the country. Places of interest to visit include Monasteries, some built into rock sides, and also, there are ancient ruins, caves, hot mineral springs, rivers and reservoirs, and excellent hiking opportunities.
Bulgarian Cities Sightseeing
Even though, the towns in Bulgaria may not be as large as some of Europe's other towns, they offer just as much to see. The capital
Sofia is a bustling, rapidly expanding city with an expectant air and a vibrant nightlife.
Rousse, with it's rich history and historic Vienna style buildings, has excellent shopping and restaurants - the red wine from Rousse is recognized as one of the best in Europe! Or why not visit Veliko Tarnovo, with it's magnificent fortress, and rustic houses clinging to the hillside above the river, or see ancient
Plovdiv, with it's seven hills, towns built upon towns through thousands of years.
